Day 32: Sun Prairie Groundhog Day Prognostication

[ 0 ] February 1, 2011 |

Although it’s likely that groundhog “Jimmy” will not be able to see his shadow through all of that snow tomorrow, it doesn’t put a damper on Sun Prairie’s Groundhog Day Prognostication.

According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, it will leave the burrow, signifying that winter will soon end.  If on the other hand, it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly “see its shadow” and retreat back into its burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks.

Jimmy will make his appearance at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 2nd at Cannery Square Plaza in Sun Prairie. At 7:10 a.m., he will predict an early spring or six more weeks of winter. His accuracy rate is 80%! Jimmy always arrives in style with a fire truck escort.

“Human Groundhogs” born on February 2nd will be recognized, so please come and celebrate with Jimmy in the Groundhog Capital of the World!

The formula to determine if Jimmy’s prediction is accurate is simple; we need to have seven continuous days of above freezing temperatures before the first day of spring on March 20th to declare him correct.

Unable to make tomorrow’s event?  Call the hotline number at 608-837-4547 from 7:15 to 9:00 a.m. on February 2nd to find out Jimmy’s prediction.
